Bakumpai is anAustronesian language belonging to theWest Barito languages. It is spoken by about 100,000Bakumpai people (a subgroup ofDayak people) living in the centralKalimantan,Indonesia.
Neighbouring ethnic groups areBanjar people, Ngaju people, andMa'anyan people. Thus there is high lexical similarity with the neighbouring languages (75% withNgaju, 45% withBanjar). In addition,Berangas language whoendangered is also very similar to Bakumpai, possibly a dialect.[2]
