TheBadia Fiesolana was a medieval and renaissance periodRoman Catholic monastery located in the town ofFiesole (in the quarter of San Domenico), northeast ofFlorence,Italy. Since 1976 the building is the main seat of theEuropean University Institute.[1] The originalCamaldolese monks building was completed in 1028 and was subsequently transferred toBenedictines fromMontecassino and theCanons Regular of St. Augustine.[2]
The monastery was built between 1025-1028 on the location of a former chapel dedicated toSaint Peter andSaint Romulus. Originally, it bore the name ofSaint Bartholomew. The present appearance dates from between 1456 and 1467, after the architectMichelozzo was commissioned byCosimo de' Medici for a Renaissance style expansion.
The former convent is now the seat of theEuropean University Institute.
