Babett Peter[1] (born 12 May 1988) is a former German professional footballer and current assistant general manager for theNational Women's Soccer League clubChicago Red Stars.[2] She played as adefender forReal Madrid CF and for theGermany women's national football team.[3]
Peter started playing football inprimary school. At the age of nine, her parents took her to the localfootball club FSV Oschatz. She later played for1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and was called up for German national teams at the junior level. During the winter break of the 2005–06 season, she moved to1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, winning theBundesliga title and theGerman Cup in her first season. In September 2007, Peter received theFritz Walter medal in gold as the best female junior player of the year. One month later, she scored her first Bundesliga goal for Potsdam againstSG Essen-Schönebeck from the penalty spot.[4]
From 2009 to 2011, Peter won three consecutive Bundesliga titles with Turbine Potsdam.[4] In the2009–10 season, Potsdam also claimed the inauguralUEFA Women's Champions League title, with Peter scoring during thepenalty shoot-out in the final.[5] One year later, Potsdam again made it to the final, but lost againstOlympique Lyonnais.
On 29 February 2012, Peter signed a three-year contract and moved to1. FFC Frankfurt on 1 July 2012.[6]
In March 2014, Peter joinedVfL Wolfsburg.[7] She won threeFrauen-Bundesliga titles with Wolfsburg as well as theDFB-Pokal Frauen five times.
On 17 September 2019,VfL Wolfsburg agreed to mutually terminate Babett's contract so she could immediately join SpanishPrimera División teamCD Tacón, signing a two-year deal with the Madrid-based club.[8] On 2 May 2022, Peter announced she intended to retire at the conclusion of the season.[9]
Peter made her debut in theGerman national team in March 2006 againstFinland. She was part of Germany's winning team at the2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, but did not play in any game. One year later, she won the bronze medal at the2008 Summer Olympics, where she became a regular starter for Germany in the knockout stage of the tournament. Peter was part of Germany's team winning the country's seventh title at the2009 European Championship. She scored her first goal for the national team at theAlgarve Cup facingChina in March 2010. Peter was called up for Germany's2011 FIFA Women's World Cup squad.[4]

Peters has worked for theChicago Red Stars as an assistant general manager since 2022, although she was never formally introduced by the club.[2]
Peter graduated from the Potsdam SportsGymnasium in June 2007, receiving herAbitur diploma. In October 2007, she became a member of the sports support group of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). Since the age of five, Peter has suffered fromfacial nerve paralysis. At the age of 15, she had an operation which improved her condition.[12]
Peter began a relationship with the American soccer playerElla Masar.[13] In September 2020, Masar gave birth to a baby boy.[14] She married Masar on 21 July 2022.[15]
