Tomoko Kuzumi (泉朋子,Izumi Tomoko) better known by herring nameAzumi Hyuga is a Japanese retiredprofessional wrestler best known for her tenure with various Japanesepromotions such asAll Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling,JWP Joshi Puroresu andNEO Japan Ladies Pro-Wrestling.[3]

Professional wrestling career

Independent circuit (1995–2009)

As a freelancer, Kuzumi is known for competing in multiple promotions of theJapanese independent scene. On the fourth night of theStarlet tournament ofArsion which took place on April 6, 2003, Kuzumi teamed up with Baby-A andMariko Yoshida in a losing effort against Bionic J,Gami and Police Woman as a result of abest two out of three falls six-woman tag team match.[4] AtJDStar Fighting Beauty ~ Dreamer ~ on December 17, 2005, Kuzumi defeatedKana.[5] AtNEO Be Happy Again ~ 10th Anniversary, an event promoted byNEO Japan Ladies Pro-Wrestling on January 6, 2008, she participated in a30-person battle royal won byMima Shimoda and also involvingEtsuko Mita,Munenori Sawa,Nagisa Nozaki,Arisa Nakajima,Tomoka Nakagawa, Tanny Mouse and others.[6] She made sporadic appearances forOz Academy with the last one taking place on October 11, 2009, atOZ Academy OZ-Supernatural where she teamed up withMayumi Ozaki to defeatCarlos Amano andDynamite Kansai.[7] AtWAVE Launch WAVE, an event promoted byPro Wrestling Wave on December 13, 2009, she competed in a20-person royal rumble match won byRyo Mizunami and also involvingIo Shirai,Aja Kong,Cherry,Moeka Haruhi,Ayumi Kurihara,Misaki Ohata and two invisible wrestlers lbert Neklenburg and Arnold Skeskejanaker.[8]

She also made sporadic appearances in men's promotions, working as a female talent in both exhibition and legit matches. AtOsaka Pro Story #12 In Tokyo, an event promoted byOsaka Pro Wrestling on June 11, 2002, she teamed up withKuishinbo Kamen and Akagi to defeatDaikokusan,Ebessan andPolicewoman.[9] On the sixth night ofNew Japan Pro Wrestling'sG1 Climax on August 10, 2002, she teamed up withCommand Bolshoi and Ran Yu-Yu to defeatKaori Yoneyama, Kayoko Haruyama and Tsubasa Kuragaki in asix-man tag team match.[10] AtBJW Cabaret Wrestling Part 1, an event promoted byBig Japan Pro Wrestling on June 27, 2003, she teamed up with Aliya in a losing effort against Bolshoi Kid andJaguar Yokota.[11]

Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (2003)

Kuzumi briefly competed in theMexican independent scene, working in a couple of matches promoted byConsejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. The last of them took place atCMLL Super Viernes on August 1, 2003, where she teamed up withMarcela to defeat Command Bolshoi andLa Amapola.[12]

JWP Joshi Puroresu (1995–2009)

Kuzumi worked for most of her career inJWP Joshi Puroresu. She made herprofessional wrestling debut on January 14, 1995, at ahouse show where she teamed up withChikayo Nagashima to defeatYuki Miyazaki and an undocumented opponent.[13] She is known for competing in signature events of the promotion such as theNatsu Onna Kettei Tournament, making her only appearance in the 2009 edition where she defeated Ayako Sato in the first-rounds but fell short toToshie Uematsu in the second round.[14]

Kuzumi retired on December 27, 2009, having wrestled her last match atJWP Climax 2009 ~ Azumi Hyuga FINAL ~ event where she competed in two matches. First of them, a battle royal won by her long time tag team partner Ran Yu-Yu and also involving notable opponents such asThe Great Kabuki,Meiko Satomura,Kyoko Kimura and others. In the other match, she teamed up with Command Bolshoi in a losing effort against Kaori Yoneyama and Kayoko Haruyama.[15]

Ice Ribbon (2007–2009)

Another promotion in which Kuzumi evolved wasIce Ribbon. She made her first appearance atIce Ribbon Future Star Vol. 1 on April 28, 2007, where she defeatedAoi Kizuki.[16] On the second night of the2009 JWP Climax, an event shared with Ice Ribbon on December 13, Kuzumi teamed up with Ran Yu-Yu to defeatEmi Sakura and Kaori Yoneyama for theInternational Ribbon Tag Team Championship.[17] She made her last appearance for the promotion on December 12, 2009, atNew Ice Ribbon #140 where she teamed up withMakoto to defeat Kazumi Shimouma andNanae Takahashi.[18]

Brief return to professional wrestling (2017)

Kuzumi came out of retirement after eight years atJWP Fly High In The 25th Anniversary Party on April 2, 2017, where she competed as a surprise entrant into a17-person battle royal also involvingDash Chisako,Hana Kimura,Natsumi Maki,Yako Fujigasaki,Sachie Abe,Aoi Kizuki and others.[19]
