Ayyo (Arabic:أيو) is a village in centralSyria, administratively part of theHama Governorate, located south ofHama. It is neighbored byKafr Buhum to the northwest,al-Khalidiyah to the north,Maarin al-Jabal to the northeast,Besirin to the south andSasikun to the southwest. According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics, Ayyo had a population of 1,980 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants are predominantlyChristians.
In an 1828Ottoman tax register, Ayyu was listed as a relatively small grain-growing village of 6feddans and paying 660qirsh in taxes.[2] In 1838, it was recorded as aGreek Orthodox Christian village (though the authors spelled it 'Abbu').[3]
