Ovnat (Hebrew:אָבְנַת) is a smallIsraeli settlement in theWest Bank on the western shore of theDead Sea, about 7 km (4 mi) south ofKalya and 12 km (7 mi) north ofMitzpe Shalem. It falls under the jurisdiction ofMegilot Regional Council. In 2022 it had a population of 249.
The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bankillegal under international law, but the Israeli government disputes this.[2]
It was founded in mid-2004, where aNahal settlement existed since 1983. It is named afterAsenath.[3][citation needed]
According toARIJ, Israel confiscated 124dunams of land from thePalestinian town ofal-Ubeidiya in order to construct Ovnat.[4]
