TheAutostrada A26 is anautostrada (Italian for "motorway") 197.1 kilometres (122.5 mi) long inItaly located in theregions ofLiguria andPiedmont. It is named theAutostrada dei Trafori ("Tunnels motoway") after the numerous tunnels through which it passes, bothApennine andSubalpine. It runs northwards fromGenoa on the Ligurian coast, over the Apennines, and across the wideplain of the Po valley to the environs ofLake Maggiore and the mouth of theVal d’Ossola. In addition to this ‘main trunk’ of the road, there are three side branches, also of motorway class which function as link roads between the A26 and the A7, the A4 and the A8. The A26, together with these link roads, is managed byAutostrade per l'Italia S.p.A. It is a part of theE25 andE62 European routes.

The A26 begins from the Genoese town ofPra', which lies on the coast to the west of the city centre. (Note that the gate of Pra' is still wrongly named "Voltri", nevertheless, Voltri has anything to do with the motorway gate and that the City of Genova has formally asked for the change of its name in "Gate of Pra' "). It crosses the Apennines at thePasso del Turchino (532m) and passes throughOvada. Near Castelferro (frazione ofPredosa) an eastern branch, the Autostrada A26/A7, provides links toNovi Ligure and to theAutostrada A7 (Genoa –Milan) which it joins nearSpineto Scrivia, to the south ofTortona.
The A26 continues northwards until nearAlessandria there is an interchange with theAutostrada A21 (Turin –Brescia). The road crosses thePo River just east ofCasale Monferrato. South ofVercelli a western branch, theAutostrada A4/26, provides a connection to theAutostrada A4 (Turin –Trieste) nearSanthià, and continues as theAutostrada A4/A5 to theAutostrada A5 (Turin – Aosta – Monte Bianco) which it joins atPavone Canavese, just south ofIvrea.
Further north, betweenGreggio andBiandrateVicolungo to the west ofNovara, the A26 intersects with theAutostrada A4 (Turin – Trieste), and atSesto Calende with theAutostrada A8. The road passes close toRomagnano Sesia andGhemme where there is an exit for theValsesia. It proceeds north-east and follows the shore ofLago Maggiore with exits forArona,Brovello-Carpugnino,Baveno -Stresa,Verbania andGravellona Toce. From here thestrada statale 33 del Sempione [it] continues the route northwards, initially as asuperstrada (a form of expressway), toDomodossola and then via theVal Divedro to theSwiss border, affording access to theSimplon Pass.
