Bulgaria

Diplomatic relations betweenAustria (then a part ofAustria-Hungary) andBulgaria were established in 1879.[1] Austria has an embassy inSofia and an honorary consulate inBurgas while Bulgaria has an embassy inVienna and an honorary consulate inSalzburg.[2]

Both countries are members of theEuropean Union,Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and theCouncil of Europe.

DuringWorld War II, Bulgarian prisoners of war were amongAllied POWs held in the Stalag XVII-AGerman POW camp inGerman-annexed Austria.[3]

In April 2005,President of BulgariaGeorgi Parvanov paid astate visit to Austria.[4]

European Union

Austria joined theEU in1995. Bulgaria joined theEU in2007.

NATO

While Bulgaria became a member ofNATO in 2004, Austria has never been a member of NATO.
