Auckengill is a settlement, 6 miles (10 kilometres) south ofJohn o' Groats, on the east coast ofCaithness, within theScottish council area ofHighland.[1]
Auckengill is situated1⁄2 mile (800 metres) north ofNybster.
AsCaithness is theViking capital of mainland Scotland, Auckengill has a museum of Viking history called theNorthlands Viking Centre. The museum examines the history of theNorse fromNorway toShetland,Orkney andCaithness. On display are models of the Viking settlement atFreswick and a VikingLongship. There is also a shop and picnic area. The museum is the site of the annual Scottish-Scandinavian Northlands Festival in September.[2]
