Auberry (/ˈɔːbɛri/) is acensus-designated place (CDP) inFresno County,California, United States. The population was 3,238 at the 2020 census. Auberry is located on Little Sandy Creek 9.5 miles (15 km) west of Shaver Lake Heights,[6] at an elevation of 2,018 feet (615 m).[5]
According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 46.8 square miles (121 km2), of which 46.4 square miles (120 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (0.85%) is water.
Auberry has aMediterranean climate (KöppenCsa) with cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Its average annualprecipitation is 26.3 in (670 mm).[7] Itshardiness zone is 8a.[8]

The Auberry post office was established in 1884, and following moves in 1887 and 1888, it was located at its present site in 1906.[6] The place is named for Al Yarborough and is spelled phonetically as his name was pronounced.[6]
The Auberry Band of theMono people was called unaħpaahtyħ, (that which is on the other side [of the San Joaquin River]) in theMono language.[10]
Auberry was also a stop on theSan Joaquin and Eastern Railroad, which was built to facilitate the construction of theBig Creek Hydroelectric Project.[11]

Auberry first appeared as acensus-designated place in the1990 United States census.[25]
The2020 United States census reported that Auberry had a population of 3,238. The population density was 69.7 inhabitants per square mile (26.9/km2). The racial makeup of Auberry was 76.1%White, 0.5%African American, 8.4%Native American, 1.1%Asian, 0.2%Pacific Islander, 2.6% fromother races, and 11.1% from two or more races.Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.1% of the population.
The census reported that 99.8% of the population lived in households, 0.2% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized.
There were 1,267 households, out of which 24.0% included children under the age of 18, 55.3% were married-couple households, 6.2% werecohabiting couple households, 19.6% had a female householder with no partner present, and 18.9% had a male householder with no partner present. 23.8% of households were one person, and 13.7% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.55. There were 900families (71.0% of all households).
The age distribution was 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% aged 18 to 24, 21.5% aged 25 to 44, 27.0% aged 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45.8 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.1 males.
There were 1,702 housing units at an average density of 36.7 units per square mile (14.2 units/km2), of which 1,267 (74.4%) were occupied. Of these, 80.7% were owner-occupied, and 19.3% were occupied by renters.[28][29]
The median household income was $75,000, and theper capita income was $36,622. About 8.8% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line.[30]
