Drawing of an Attic base

Attic base is the term given inarchitecture to the base ofRomanIonic order columns, consisting of an upper and lowertorus, separated by ascotia (hollow concave molding) andfillets.[1]

It was the favorite of the Romans, and was also employed by them for columns of theCorinthian andComposite orders.[1] The style can be seen inByzantine architecture as well; in theRomanesque period a great number of antique Roman columns were salvaged and reused in the interiors and on the porticos of churches, often incorporating the Attic base.[citation needed]
