Atshan (Arabic:عطشان) is a village in centralSyria, administratively part of theSuran Subdistrict of theHama District, located northeast ofHama city. According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Atshan had a population of 1,809 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants areSunni Muslims.
Atshan was sold by the prominent landowning Barazi family ofHama to a merchant from Hama, Muhammad Katkaz, in 1929. Its inhabitants wereSunni MuslimArabs ofBedouin origin.[2]
On 10 October 2015, the town was seized by theSyrian government government from opposition fighters.[3]
Since the end of theSyrian Civil War, at least 357IDPs have returned to Atshan, most of whom had been living in the Atmeh Camp, located inAtmeh, Idlib.[4]
