East Ferris is atownship in northeasternOntario,Canada located betweenTrout Lake andLake Nosbonsing in theDistrict of Nipissing.West Ferris has long been annexed into the city ofNorth Bay.
The main communities within East Ferris areAstorville andCorbeil. There are also smaller residential areas in the township, known asDerland Road andLake Nosbonsing.
Astorville and Derland were formerly stops along theCanadian National RailwayAlderdale Subdivision.[3] Rail service declined in the mid-20th century and was eliminated altogether in 1996.[4]
In July 2005, Astorville hosted the first Northern OntarioBall Hockey Championship.[5][6] In November 2005, Astorville was one of nine communities that voted on whether to accept private funding for a health centre.[7]
Corbeil is located on theLa Vase River, at a turn inHighway 94 south of its terminus atHighway 17. The township's municipal office and fire station is located in Corbeil on Highway 94 south of Voyer Road.
Many residents who live in East Ferris, commute back and forth to the City ofNorth Bay for work and for shopping.
The township's public library is located in Astorville.
The township holds an annual winter carnival, as well as town picnics in the summer.
Astorville is home to theNosbonsing Curling Club.
Canadian cartoonistLynn Johnston lived and worked in Corbeil until she moved toNorth Vancouver in 2015.
TheDionne quintuplets were born on a farm near Corbeil. Corbeil was also the home ofMarie-Louise Meilleur, asupercentenarian who was 117 years old when she died in 1998. She was the oldest living person in the world for the eight months preceding her death, and remains both the oldest verified person in Canadian history and thesixth oldest verified person in the world. She lived at the Nipissing Manor Nursing Home, which was once the mansion that housed the Dionne sisters.
In the2021 Census of Population conducted byStatistics Canada, East Ferris had a population of4,946 living in1,890 of its2,172 total private dwellings, a change of1.7% from its 2016 population of4,862. With a land area of 151.94 km2 (58.66 sq mi), it had a population density of32.6/km2 (84.3/sq mi) in 2021.[8]
