246 Asporina is a sizeablemain-beltasteroid. It is classified as one of the fewA-type asteroids.
It was discovered byAlphonse Borrelly on 6 March 1885 inMarseille and was named afterAsporina, a goddess worshipped on Mount Asporenus (or Aspordenus),Asia Minor.[2] This location is known in the modern day as theYunt Mountains,[3] and Asporina is sometimes identified with the goddessCybele.
The spectrum of 246 Asporina reveals the strong presence of the mineralolivine, a relative rarity in the asteroid belt.[4]
