Indian businessman and former cricketer (born 1972)
Ashutosh Dnyaneshwar Agashe [ a] (born 21 October 1972) is an Indian businessman and former cricketer. He has served as thechairman andmanaging director of theBrihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd. since 2009.
A formerfirst-class andList A cricketer, he played in theRanji Trophy for theMaharashtra cricket team from 1996 to 1999. In 1999, he also played in theBelfast Cricket League forDerry , and briefly served as aselector for theMaharashtra Cricket Association in 2003.
Early life and family: 1972–1996[ edit ] Agashe was born inPune ,Maharashtra on 21 October 1972,[ 4] into an aristocratic and entrepreneurialChitpavan Brahmin family of industrialistDnyaneshwar Agashe of theAgashe gharana ofMangdari ,[ 5] and his wife Rekha Gogte, of the Gogtegharana ofBelgaum .[ 6]
Through his father, Agashe is a grandson ofChandrashekhar Agashe , a nephew ofPanditrao Agashe andShakuntala Karandikar , a younger brother ofMandar Agashe , an older brother ofSheetal Agashe ,[ 7] of distant relation toThird Anglo-Maratha War general Bapu Gokhale ,[ 8] musicianAshutosh Phatak ,[ 9] historianDinkar G. Kelkar , and scientistP. K. Kelkar .[ 10]
Through his mother, Agashe is a great-nephew ofB. M. Gogte ,[ 6] a first cousin to poetRashmi Parekh , a descendant of the aristocraticLatey (Bhagwat) family , and a relation toKokuyo Camlin headDilip Dandekar , and academicJyoti Gogte .[ 11]
Agashe graduated with aB.Com degree from theBrihan Maharashtra College of Commerce .[ 1] He represented his college in theircricket team.[ 12] He married Shalini Phadke in 1997;[ 13] she is a maternal granddaughter of the last ruler of theKurundwad Junior princely state from thePatwardhan Dynasty .[ 14]
Career in cricket: 1996–2000[ edit ] Beginning in 1996, he playedfirst-class andList A cricket. His batting style has been described as aright-hand bat and his bowling style has been described as aright-arm medium .[ 15] [ 16]
From 1997 to 1999, Agashe represented his home state ofMaharashtra as a member of theMaharashtra cricket team playing first-class cricket in theRanji Trophy ,[ 17] having been selected for a four-day fixture for the Ranji Trophy by theMaharashtra Cricket Association in 1998,[ 18] debuting as the team'scaptain against theMumbai cricket team at theWankhede Stadium in November 1999.[ 19]
In 1999, Agashe further played in theBelfast Cricket League for Creevedonnell Cricket Club inDerry .[ 2] He subsequently left List A cricket in 2000,[ 15] having played since 1996.[ 16] Remembered as one of the more prominent cricketers from Pune to play for the Maharashtra cricket team,[ 20] [ 21] and has been a life member of the Maharashtra Cricket Association.[ 22]
Career in business: 2000–present[ edit ] Beginning in 1994, Agashe was appointed adirector at Brima Finance, before joining his father on theboard of directors of theBrihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd. in 1996.[ 23] In 1998, under the leadership of Agashe and his father, the syndicate began marketingayurvedic medicines, health care products, and bulk raw materials,[ 24] manufacturingfood products andveterinary medicine,[ 25] promoting ayurvedicskincare products made by its sister company,Brihans Natural Products in 2000,[ 26] and manufacturing alcohol-based chemicals by 2002.[ 27]
In September 2000, Agashe was appointed as a joint managing director of the syndicate.[ 28] In April 2002, he contributed an essay titledअजातशत्रू (lit. ' One who has no enemies ' ) to his father's festschrift .[ 29] In 2003, he was made aselector at theMaharashtra Cricket Association , at the time, chaired by his father,[ 30] [ 31] which raisednepotism concerns and drew in criticism for the association.[ 32] That same year, he supported the publication of a book aboutMahavira and otherJain Tirthankaras by Shantilal Bhandari.[ 33]
By 2004, Agashe was also looking after several operations of theSuvarna Sahakari Bank .[ 34] That same year, he was part of his father's Maharashtra Cricket Association committee as a representative for the Club of Maharashtra,[ 35] and worked as his father's aide during the controversial elections at theBoard of Control for Cricket in India , when his father was not allowed to vote asvice president of the board due to allegedfactionalism .[ 36]
In 2005, under Agashe, the syndicate entered a partnership with Howling Wolves Wine Group ofAustralia which planned to set up awine production base in India.[ 37] [ 23] At the time, he was joint managing director at the syndicate.[ 38] Between 2004 and 2005, he was elected thechairman ofSuvarna Sahakari Bank .[ 3] and served as chairman when the bank was put undermoratorium by theReserve Bank of India in 2006.[ 39] In 2007, he received theDSK Group Energy Award of 2007 for corporate implementation of energy efficiency improvement measures.[ 40]
In 2008, Agashe was one of the directors implicated in Suvarna Sahakari Bank'salleged scam case . Him along with his parents, aunt and brother were taken underjudicial custody ,[ 41] during which time his father died in January 2009.[ 42] He was subsequently released onbail that same month.[ 43] The bank's merger with theIndian Overseas Bank was finalised by theReserve Bank of India in May 2009.[ 44] [ 45]
Since 2009, Agashe has been director at Agashe Brothers Financing Company, and since 2010, director at Baumgarten and Wallia.[ 46] In August 2009, he was appointedchairman andmanaging director of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate.[ 47] In 2015, he conceived the Dnyaneshwar Agashe Trophy as the highest award of merit at the Poona Young Cricketers Hindu Gymkhana's annual cricket tournament, the PYC Premier League, in honour of his father.[ 48] In February 2019, he came out of retirement to participate in thePoona Club Premier League .[ 49]
In May 2021, during theCOVID-19 pandemic in India , Agashe donatedoxygen concentrators to hospitals inShreepur, Maharashtra .[ 50] [ 51] In July 2024, he owned achess team for thechess league organised by the PYC Hindu Gymkhana,[ 52] further owning atennis team at thegymkhana 'stennis tournament in December 2024,[ 53] with that same team going on to playtable tennis , tennis, andbadminton in the gymkhana'sracquet sport league in March 2025.[ 54]
