Ashley De Vere Campbell (29 September 1880 – 5 July 1943)[1] was an Australian maletennis player who was active before World War I. He was born in Sydney and attendedNewington College (1893–1898)[2] where he was a noted cricketer. Campbell didn't play tennis until the age of eighteen and his game was heavily influenced byDavid Edwards who was a fellowOld Newingtonian.[3] Campbell moved to Melbourne in 1903 and was winner of the1910 and1914 Australasian men's doubles championships.[4] From 1929 until 1939 he lived in Europe, having been an executive of theColonial Sugar Refining Company in Australia and New Zealand.[5] Campbell became secretary of theFree French movement in Victoria, and was secretary of theRed Cross and an active member of theAlliance Française. He died in a hospital inEast St Kilda, Victoria.[6]
