Ashish Vidyarthi (born 19 June 1965[5]) is anIndian actor who predominantly works inHindi,Telugu,Tamil,Bengali,Kannada,Malayalam,English,Marathi, andOdia films. He is noted for his antagonist and character roles. In 1995, he received theNational Film Award for Best Supporting Actor forDrohkaal.[6] He has also received several awards including aFilmfare Award South along with nominations for twoFilmfare Awards.[7][8]
Ashish Vidyarthi was born on 19 June 1965 inDelhi, India to aMalayali father fromThalassery in theNorth Malabar region ofKerala, and aBengali mother fromRajasthan with ancestry inWest Bengal.[9] His mother Reba Vidyarthi (Née: Chattopadhyay) was aKathak guru,[10] while his father Govind Vidyarthi is an expert in cataloguing and archiving vanishingPerforming Arts of India for theSangeet Natak Akademi. He attendedNational School of Drama until 1990 and associated himself with another theatre group,Act One, run byN. K. Sharma.[11]
In 1992, he moved toBombay (nowMumbai). Ashish played the role ofV. P. Menon in his first film,Sardar, based onSardar Vallabhai Patel's Life.[12] Though, his first release wasDrohkaal, for which he won aNational Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1995. He is also renowned for his role as Ashutosh, in1942:A Love Story.[13] Ashish received theStar Screen Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role, for the 1996 filmIs Raat Ki Subah Nahin.[14] In the same year, for the same role, he was also nominated forFilmfare Best Villain Award.[15]
Vidhyarthi has worked in 11 languages in over 300 films.[16] He is the co-founder and curator of AVID MINER Conversations, which are interactive modules customized for organizations.[17]
Currently, he has aYouTube channel with over one million subscribers and he often vlogs aboutfood.[18]
Vidyarthi married Piloo Vidyarthi aka Rajoshi in 2001. They have a son Arth. The couple filed for mutual divorce in 2022.[19] He married Rupali Barua in 2023.[20]
During his career, Vidyarthi has acted in over 300 films in 11 different languages.[21]
