TheArtega are an Arab tribe in Sudan. They came fromHadramut around eight centuries ago, settling nearTokar. The name is said to mean "patrician."[1]
They became princes Sawakin since 664 AH under Mamluk and the Othman Caliphate.[citation needed] They were all followers of theMahdi andKhalifa in theMahdist War (1883-1898).[1]
