Artaiouteichos (Ancient Greek:Ἀρταίων τεῖχος) was a Greek town located near the coast of thePropontis inancient Mysia. According to the historianCraterus, it was located on the banks of the riverRhyndacus.[1] The first part of the town's name was ofPersian origin, the second part means 'wall' in Greek. The town belonged to theDelian League since it appears in the tribute registry ofAthens for the years 425/4 and 422/1 BCE where it had to pay aphoros of 1000drachmae.[2]
It has been suggested that it could be the same city thatPliny the Elder mentions by the name ofAriace[3] but most scholars consider that the Ariace of Pliny should be identified withArtace.[2]
Its site is located on the lower Rhyndacus.[4][5]
