Arricau-Bordes (French pronunciation:[aʁikobɔʁd];Occitan:Arricau e Bòrdas) is acommune in thePyrénées-Atlantiquesdepartment in theNouvelle-Aquitaine region of south-westernFrance.

Arricau-Bordes is located some 12 km north-west ofMaubourguet and some 40 km north-east ofPau. Access to the commune is by the D13 road fromCadillon in the north passing through the heart of the commune and through the village then continuing south toLembeye. The D298 fromAurions-Idernes forms the entire eastern border of the commune as it goes south to join the D13 north of Lembaye. The D228 comes fromSéméacq-Blachon in the east and passes through the south of the commune west toGayon. About 60% of the commune is forested mostly in a north–south belt through the centre with the rest of the commune farmland.[3]

TheLisau river flows through the heart of the commune from theLac de Castillon just over the southern border to theLac de Cadillon just over the northern border of the commune.[3]

Toponymy

The commune name inbéarnais isArricau-Bordas.

According toMichel Grosclaude the nameArricau was formed from twoGascon terms:arric, meaning "ravine" or "Thalweg", andcau, meaning "sunken".[7]

Bordes comes from theOccitanborda meaning "house" or "Farm".[8]

History

Paul Raymond noted that, in 1385, Arricau and Bordes depended on thebailiwick ofLembeye and had respectively 18 and 12fires. Arricau then had two parishes: Saint-Martin and Saint-Jacques. The fief of Bordes depended on theViscounts of Béarn.[4]

Arricau and Bordes were merged between 1861 and 1866.[13]
