Arrah Lee Gaul (1888 - December 11,1980), was an American painter. She was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at thePhiladelphia Art Club. Gaul was the official artist of thePhiladelphia Sesqui-Centennial[1] and an original member of thePhiladelphia Ten.[2][3]
Gaul was born in 1888 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[4] She attended thePhiladelphia School of Design, studying underElliott Daingerfield, andHenry B. Snell.[2]
Gaul pursued additional studies at theUniversity of Pennsylvania before returning in 1921[3] to teach at the Philadelphia School of Design and she eventually became the head of the art department there.[1]
In 1917 she participated in the inaugural exhibition of the Philadelphia Ten.[2] She also exhibited nationally at theArt Institute of Chicago, thePennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and theNational Academy of Design in New York. She was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Club. Internationally, she exhibited atBeaux Arts Gallery in London, the Paris Salon of 1931 and theGrand Palais des Champs Elysees.[1]
Gaul frequently traveled to foreign locations to paint including Greece, Italy, Algiers, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and India.[2]
She died on December 11, 1980,[5] in Philadelphia[4] and was interred atWest Laurel Hill Cemetery inBala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.[5]
