Aripert I (also spelledAribert) was king of theLombards (653–661) inItaly. He was the son ofGundoald, Duke of Asti, who had crossed theAlps fromBavaria with his sisterTheodelinda. As a relative of the Bavarian ducal house, his was called theBavarian Dynasty.
He was the firstChalcedonian Christian king of the Lombards, elected after the assassination of theArianRodoald. Not a warrior, he is mostly renowned for his church foundings. He spread Catholicism over the whole Lombard realm and built theChurch of the Saviour inPavia, the capital. He left the kingdom in a state of peace, asking the nobles to elect jointly his two sons,Perctarit andGodepert, which they did.[1]
