Arik Shivek (Hebrew:אריק שיבק; born 10 September 1956) is an Israeli professionalbasketball coach.
Shivek is also the former head coach of the seniorIsraeli national basketball team, serving from 2009 to 2014, succeedingZvi Sherf.[1]
He coachedABC Amsterdam during the team's dynasty years, and won threeDutch national championships with the team. Shivek won theIsraeli Premier League in 2016 withHapoel Eilat.
Shivek started coaching in 1983, withMaccabi Netanya, and later moved to clubs such asMaccabi Ra’anana, Maccabi Ramat Gan, andHapoel Tel Aviv.[2] Coach Shivek is known for his calm and composed behaviour on and off the court. Beginning in 2003, he coached theAmsterdam Ricoh Astronauts in theNetherlands, leading it to championships in 2008 and 2009,[3] and theAntwerp Giants in Belgium.[4]
He was the Coach of the Year in theDutch Premier League in 2005 and 2009, and was named the league's Coach of the Year in 2008, by the websiteEurobasket.com.[2]
In December 2009, he was appointed as head basketball coach of the seniorIsrael national team.[5] In June 2011, he re-signed as coach ofDexia Mons-Hainaut for a third straight year, subsequent to declining job offers from teams in France and Germany.[6][7]
In the 2015–16 season, Shivek coached Israeli clubMaccabi Rishon LeZion. He coached the team to its first Israeli championship, after beating powerhousesMaccabi Tel Aviv andHapoel Jerusalem, on the way to the league title. On 27 February 2017, Shivek was fired.[8]
On 16 May 2017, Shivek became the head coach ofMaccabi Tel Aviv, for the Playoffs of the2016–17 BSL season.[9]
On 20 December 2017,Bnei Herzliya officially announced Shivek as their new head coach.[10]
On 31 January 2019, Shivek returned to Bnei Herzliya for a second stint, signing for the rest of the season.[11]
In May 2023, Shivek was hired as head coach of theNetherlands national team.[12]
