Arik Armstead (born November 15, 1993) is an American professionalfootballdefensive end for theJacksonville Jaguars of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theOregon Ducks and was selected by theSan Francisco 49ers in the first round of the2015 NFL draft.
Armstead attendedPleasant Grove High School inElk Grove, California.[1][2][3] During hishigh school football career, he had 126tackles and 7.5sacks. Armstead was a four-star recruit byRivals.com and sixth bestdefensive end in his class.[4] He originally committed to theUniversity of Southern California to playcollege football, but switched to theUniversity of Oregon.[5][6] He also playedbasketball in high school.

Armstead played in all 13 games as atrue freshman in 2012, making one start. He finished the 2012 season with 26 tackles and a half-sack. During the spring he joined theDucks basketball team, where heredshirted his first year. Armstead played in 13 games as a sophomore in 2013, recording 15 tackles and one sack. During the spring he re-joined the basketball team. He played in one game, before quitting to focus on football.[7][8][9] Armstead returned to the football team his junior season in 2014.[10][11][12] Following the 2014 season, he declared for the NFL Draft.[13]

TheSan Francisco 49ers selected Armstead in the first round (17th overall) in the2015 NFL draft.[16] He was the fourth defensive end selected in 2015.[17] Armstead was unable to attendtraining camp andorganized team activities until Oregon's school year had concluded due to the NFL's policy that prohibits rookies joining teams until their year is officially completed. Upon arrival, he was competing for the job as the starting defensive end againstQuinton Dial,Darnell Dockett,Glenn Dorsey, andTank Carradine after it was left vacant due to the retirement ofJustin Smith.[18] Head coachJim Tomsula named him the fifth defensive end on the depth chart to begin the regular season, behind Quinton Dial, Glenn Dorsey, Tank Carradine, andTony Jerod-Eddie.[19]
Armstead made his NFL debut in the season-opening 20–3 victory against theMinnesota Vikings. During the game, Armstead recorded one tackle for loss.[20]In Week 3 of the season, Armstead recorded three combined tackles and made his first NFL sack on quarterbackCarson Palmer for a four-yard loss during a 47–7 road loss to theArizona Cardinals.[21]In Week 11, he collected a season-high six combined tackles in a 29–13 loss at theSeattle Seahawks.[22]In Week 17, Armstead earned his first NFL start and made a solo tackle during a 19–16 overtime victory over theSt. Louis Rams.[23]
Armstead finished his rookie year with 19 combined tackles (14 solo) and two sacks in 16 games played with one game started.[24]
The 49ers hiredChip Kelly as their new head coach, who was also Armstead's head coach at Oregon.[25] Armstead competed to be the starting defensive end after Glenn Dorsey was moved tonose tackle. Armstead competed againstDeForest Buckner and Quinton Dial. Kelly named Armstead and Dial the starting defensive ends for Week 1.[26]
In the season-opener against theLos Angeles Rams, Armstead recorded his first sack of the season onCase Keenum during the 28–0 shutout win.[27]In week 6 against theBuffalo Bills, Armstead recorded a strip sack onTyrod Taylor which was recovered by former college teammateDeForest Buckner during the 45–16 loss.[28]
On November 8, 2016, the 49ers placed Armstead oninjured reserve with a left shoulder injury.[29] A week later, he had surgery to repair the injured shoulder.[30]Armstead finished his second season with 15 combined tackles (nine solo), a forced fumble, and 2.5 sacks in eight games and four starts.[31]
During Week 2 against the Seahawks, Armstead recorded his first and only full sack of the season onRussell Wilson during the 12–9 road loss.[32]On October 17, 2017, Armstead was placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken hand in Week 6.[33] He finished his third season with 16 combined tackles (eight solo), 1.5 sacks, and a pass deflection in six games.[34]
On April 30, 2018, the 49ers picked up the fifth-year option on Armstead's contract.[35] During Week 3 against theKansas City Chiefs, he recorded his first sack of the season onPatrick Mahomes during the 38–27 road loss.[36]In Week 7 against the Rams, Armstead recorded a season high five tackles and sackedJared Goff once during the 39–10 loss.[37]In the next game against the Cardinals, Armstead sacked rookie quarterbackJosh Rosen once during the 18–15 road loss.[38]Armstead finished the season with 48 tackles (33 solo) and three sacks in 16 games and starts.[39]

During the season-opener against theTampa Bay Buccaneers, Armstead recorded his first sack of the season onJameis Winston during the 31–17 road victory.[40] Two weeks later against thePittsburgh Steelers, he forced a fumble onJames Conner which was recovered byDeForest Buckner late in the fourth quarter to help seal a 24–20 win.[41] During Week 6 against the Rams, Armstead recorded a season high 6 tackles, half a sack onJared Goff, and recovered a fumble lost by Goff during the 20–7 road victory.[42] In the next game against theWashington Redskins, he sackedCase Keenum once during the 9–0 road victory. With that sack, Armstead set a new single season career high of 3.5 sacks.[43]The following week against theCarolina Panthers, Armstead sackedKyle Allen twice during the 51–13 win.[44] Two weeks later against the Seahawks onMonday Night Football, he sackedRussell Wilson 1.5 times during the 27–24 overtime loss.[45] During Week 12 against theGreen Bay Packers onSunday Night Football, Armstead sackedAaron Rodgers twice during the 37–8 win.[46]
The 2019 season was a breakout season for Armstead. He recorded 54 tackles (32 solo), a team-leading 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 16 games and starts. He also ranked second on the 49ers regarding tackles for loss.[47]
Armstead made his playoff debut in theNational Football Conference (NFC) Divisional Round of the playoffs against the Vikings. During the game, Armstead sackedKirk Cousins once in the 27–10 win.[48] In the NFC Championship Game against the Packers, he sacked Aaron Rodgers once during the 37–20 win.[49] InSuper Bowl LIV against the Chiefs, Armstead recorded three tackles during the 31–20 loss.[50]
On March 16, 2020, Armstead signed a five-year, $85 million contract extension with the 49ers with $48.5 million guaranteed.[51][52] During Week 2 against theNew York Jets, he recorded his first sack of the season onSam Darnold during the 31–13 road victory.[53] He was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team on November 16, 2020,[54] and activated on November 25.[55] In the 2020 season, he started in all 16 games. He finished with 3.5 sacks, 49 total tackles, and three passes defended.[56]
On December 7, 2021, Armstead was nominated by the 49ers for theWalter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.[57] During Week 18, in the 49ers final game of the regular season, Armstead recorded 2.5 sacks in a 27–24 overtime victory against the Rams.[58] The victory clinched the 49ers' spot in theplayoffs that year. In the 2021 season, Armstead started in all 17 games.[59] He had six sacks and 63 total tackles. Two weeks later, in theNFC Divisional Round, Armstead sacked Packers quarterbackAaron Rodgers twice in a 13-10 victory that sent the 49ers to theNFC Championship Game.[60]
On November 10, 2022, Armstead revealed that he was rehabbing ahairline fracture in his left ankle.[61] He appeared in and started nine games. He recorded two sacks in the 49ers' three postseason games.[62]
In the 2023 season, Armstead appeared in and started 12 games. He finished with five sacks and 27 total tackles.[63]
InSuper Bowl LVIII, Armstead recorded one sack and six total tackles in the 25–22 overtime loss to the Chiefs.[64] Two days after losing the Super Bowl, it was revealed that Armstead was playing through a knee injury during the playoffs, which later turned out to be a torn meniscus. Armstead told reporters that he suffered the injury on December 3, 2023, after a game against thePhiladelphia Eagles. Armstead required surgery on the meniscus, which caused him to miss most off-season activities.[65]
On March 13, 2024, Armstead was released by the 49ers.[66]
On March 15, 2024, theJacksonville Jaguars signed Armstead to a three-year, $51 million contract.[67]

Armstead is aChristian.[68] Armstead and his wife, Melinda, have two daughters.[69]
Armstead's brother,Armond Armstead, played college football at USC and in theCanadian Football League.[70]
Armstead played inChess.com's BlitzChamps, arapid tournament for NFL players.[71] He finished last in his group behindLarry Fitzgerald andWill Davis, and for personal reasons, he was not able to play the consolation game. As a result, the players split the $22,500 consolation prize fund equally amongst their charities.[72][73]
