TheArgentine cake, also known asDolores cake orArgentine cake of Dolores,[1] is a traditionalcake from the city ofDolores, Buenos Aires,Argentina. It is made of multiple layers ofcrepes,dulce de leche filling and topped withlemon icing.
Its origins date back in the late 19th century. The original recipe was conceived by twoUruguayan women, who were ironers and pastry makers, for the celebrations ofMay 25th. It was made withfruit jam, 25 layers of thin pancakes to represent thenational day and topped withicing. The fruit jam would later be replaced withdulce de leche.[2]
The cake was declaredIntangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation.[1]
The cake was declared a local product of Dolores in 2004 and celebrates its own annual festival, the "Fiesta de la Torta Argentina", every May 25th.[3]
