TheArctic Ocean Flotilla (Russian:Флотилия Северного Ледовитого океана,romanizedFlotiliya Severnogo Ledovitogo okeana), was a Russian militaryflotilla stationed in Aleksandrovsk (present-dayPolyarny) near the mouth of theKola Gulf,Iokanga, andArkhangelsk.

History

On 2 July [O.S. 19 June]  1916 the official formation of the AOF began and by September was largely complete. By the end of 1917 the AOF comprised thebattleshipChesme, thecruisersAskold andVaryag, 6destroyers, 3submarines and other ships. The AOF's operational zone included theBarents Sea - from the Norwegian border to theKara Gates - including theWhite Sea. Its mission was to secure uninterrupted the sea lines of communications connectingRussia with itsEntente allies.[1]

After BolshevikRussia'swithdrawal fromWorld War I in March 1918, the flotilla comprised approximately 90combatant andauxiliary ships. In August 1918Allied interventionist forces and theWhite Army captured the best ships of the AOF. The rest of the ships were[when?] intentionally[by whom?] put out of commission or destroyed.
