Archives & Museum Informatics is a company based inToronto, Ontario, Canada (and previouslyPittsburgh, USA), that organizesconferences, and undertakes consulting,publishing andtraining in the field ofcultural heritage, especially formuseums.
Archives & Museum Informatics was led by David Bearman (1950-2023) and Jennifer Trant. The latter is Editor-in-Chief of the associatedArchives and Museum Informatics journal published bySpringer.
The company founded and organized the annualMuseums and the Web and ICHIM (International Cultural Heritage Informatics Meeting) conferences until 2011. It publishes conferenceproceedings, educational materials, research reports andarticles. It organizesworkshops andseminars on the management ofelectronic records,virtual libraries andarchives,multimedia andinteractive publishing,intellectual property management andelectronic information standards. Residential seminars are organized onGrindstone Island,Big Rideau Lake, in theRideau Canal System. The company offers consultancy forarchives,museums,libraries and cultural heritage organizations relating toinformation technology issues.
As a member of thesteve.museum steering committee, from 2005 to 2008[1] Archives & Museum Informatics spearheaded an experiment in art museum digital imagecataloging by allowing the public to introduce new search-terms to the formalcatalog.[2]
Archives & Museum Informatics founded and organized theMuseums and the Web international conference[3][4] from 1997 to 2011.The conference considers the interdisciplinarymuseological field of how museums and their users can benefit from the use of theWorld Wide Web.
The annualInternational Cultural Heritage Informatics Meeting conference (ICHIM) is organized byArchives & Museums Informatics.[5][6]It was normally held inEurope, especiallyParis, and covereddigital culture andheritage. It included a proceedings.[7] The last meeting was held in 2007.[6]
