Arcabuco is a town and municipality in theRicaurte Province, part of theColombianDepartment ofBoyacá. Arcabuco is situated on theAltiplano Cundiboyacense with the urban centre at an altitude of 2,739 metres (8,986 ft). The municipality bordersMoniquirá andGámbita in the north,Villa de Leyva andChíquiza in the south,Cómbita in the east andGachantivá and Villa de Leyva in the west. The department capitalTunja is 34 kilometres (21 mi) to the south.[1]
The name Arcabuco comes fromChibcha and means either "Place of the intricate scrublands" or "Place enclosed by the hills".[2]
The area of Arcabuco in the times before theSpanish conquest was inhabited by theMuisca. Their territory was part of theMuisca Confederation, a loose collection ofrulers. Arcabuco was part of thezacazgo, with thezaque based inHunza.
Modern Arcabuco was founded on October 22, 1856 by Celedonio Umaña and Leopoldo Rodríguez.[1]
The economy of Arcabuco is centered aroundagriculture andlivestock farming. Apart from the agricultural productspotatoes andstrawberries, the town is known as a large producer ofalmojábanas.[1]
Arcabuco has asubtropical highland climate (Cfb) with moderate to heavy rainfall year-round.
