Araripemydidae is a family of freshwater aquaticturtles belonging to the orderPleurodira (side-necked turtles), known from the Early Cretaceous of South America and Africa. The family contains two recognisedmonotypic genera,Araripemys andTaquetochelys, from theSantana Group of Brazil and theElrhaz Formation of Niger, respectively,[1] which date to theAptian-Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous.[2] They are consider to be the mostbasal lineage within thePelomedusoides.[3] They are thought to have been specialisedsuction feeders.[4]Laganemys was named in 2013 but was later determined to be synonymous withTaquetochelys.[3]
