TheShire of Aramac was alocal government area located in centralQueensland about 1,100 kilometres (684 mi) north west of the state capital,Brisbane, between the towns ofBarcaldine andWinton. It covered an area of 23,364.1 square kilometres (9,020.9 sq mi), and existed as a local government entity from 1879 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the Shires ofBarcaldine andJericho to form theBarcaldine Region.

History

TheAramac Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under theDivisional Boards Act 1879 with a population of 841.[2]

On 9 May 1900, part of theAramac Division was excised to create the newLongreach Division under theDivisional Boards Act 1887.[3]

On 27 December 1902, part of theAramac Division was excised to create theIlfracombe Division under theDivisional Boards Act 1887.[4]

With the passage of theLocal Authorities Act 1902, Aramac Division became the Shire of Aramac on 31 March 1903.[5]

On 15 March 2008, under theLocal Government (Reform Implementation) Act 2007 passed by theParliament of Queensland on 10 August 2007, the Shire of Aramac merged with the Shires ofBarcaldine andJericho to form theBarcaldine Region.[5][6]

The Shire operated theAramac Tramway fromAramac to its junction nearBarcaldine with theCentral Western railway line fromRockhampton toLongreach from 1911 to 1975.[7]
