Aquarius (アクエリアス) is an American-owned Japanese brand ofsports drink manufactured byThe Coca-Cola Company. It originated in 1978[citation needed], and was first introduced in 1983 inJapan as a grapefruit-flavored sports drink,[1] as a response to a competitor's brand of sports drink calledPocari Sweat. It was introduced inSpain andPortugal in 1991, and was the official drink of the1992 Summer Olympics inBarcelona,1994 Winter Olympics inNorway,2008 Summer Olympics inBeijing,2016 Summer Olympics inRio de Janeiro, and the2020 Summer Olympics.[2][3] The brand has been heavily marketed by giving awayfree samples in sporting events.[4]
Currently, it is marketed inUK,[5]Spain,Japan,Argentina,Belgium,Bosnia and Herzegovina,Chile,China,France,Hong Kong,Indonesia,Luxembourg,Macau,Morocco, theNetherlands,Peru,Portugal,Serbia,Singapore,Switzerland,Taiwan andThailand.[6] The majority of its consumers are non-athletes.[3]Aquarius is available in the following flavors:Citrus Blend,Grapefruit,Lemon,Orange,Watermelon, RedPeach,Blueberry and Tropical.[6] The availability of these flavors changes from country to country.
InMalaysia and theMaldives,bottled water is also available under the Aquarius brand.[6]
In Argentina, "Aquarius by The Coca-Cola Company" is a flavored water brand.
In Chile, it is also available under the brand of "Aquarius byAndina".
In China, it is sold under the brand of "Shuidongle" (Chinese:水动乐) because Shanghai Maling Aquarius Co., Ltd.(Chinese:上海梅林正广和股份有限公司), a subsidiary ofBright Food owns the trademark "Aquarius" in China.[7]
