Appenzell (Swiss Standard German pronunciation:[ˈapn̩ˌtsɛl]) is a village,[1][2][3] though considered as atown by theFSO,[4] and thecapital of thecanton ofAppenzell Innerrhoden inSwitzerland. Appenzell has no municipal government of its own; rather, the different parts of Appenzell belong to and are governed by the districtsAppenzell andSchwende-Rüte.[5] Because of that, for firefighting, energy and water, the village of Appenzell has a special-purpose municipality, theFeuerschaugemeinde.

History

In 1071, the village was referred to asAbbacella. By 1223, this changed toAbbatiscella, meaning theAbbot's cell. This refers to the abbot of theAbbey of Saint Gall.

The buildings in the village core, the parish church, the 1563 town hall, theSalesis house, the ruins ofClanx Castle, and the state archives with the administration building are listed asheritage sites of national importance.[3]

Transport

Appenzell railway station is ajunction station of theGossau–Wasserauen and theAppenzell–St. Gallen–Trogen railways, which are both operated byAppenzell Railways (Appenzeller Bahnen, AB). The station is served by theS21 andS23, which links Appenzell toSt. Gallen,Herisau andGossau SG, respectively, which are served by long-distance trains.
