TheAppellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 (39 & 40 Vict. c. 59) was anact of theParliament of the United Kingdom that altered thejudicial functions of the House of Lords by allowing senior judges to sit in theHouse of Lords aslife peers with the rank ofbaron, known asLords of Appeal in Ordinary.[1] The first person to be made alaw lord under its terms wasSir Colin Blackburn on 16 October 1876, who becameBaron Blackburn.

The whole act was repealed by sections145 and146 of, and schedule 17 to,paragraph 9, andpart 5 of schedule 18 to, theConstitutional Reform Act 2005, which transferred the judicial functions from the House of Lords to theSupreme Court of the United Kingdom.Articles 2(e) and (f) of theConstitutional Reform Act 2005 (Commencement No. 11) Order 2009 (SI 2009/1604) provided that this repeal would take effect on 1 October 2009.

Following the creation of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, the practice of appointing Lords of Appeal in Ordinary was discontinued. The last person to be made a law lord wasSir Brian Kerr on 29 June 2009, who becameBaron Kerr of Tonaghmore.
