Antonio Rivas Martínez (born 13 September 1965) is a Spanish formerfootballer who played as acentral defender, and amanager. He is the current youth football director ofReal Oviedo.
Rivas was born inAlcázar de San Juan,Province of Ciudad Real. After an unsuccessful four-year stint withAtlético Madrid, only appearing in four games with the first team, he signed forRCD Mallorca in summer 1988, being regularly used in hisonly season as theBalearic Islands club returned toLa Liga after one year out.[1]
Subsequently, Rivas joinedReal Oviedo, going on to play nine consecutive campaigns in the top flight and rarely missing a match when healthy, while being deployed in several defensive positions.[1] In1990–91, he contributed 36 appearances to help theAsturias sidequalify for theUEFA Cup.[2] In1994–95, he scored a career-high five goals for another comfortable midtable finish (ninth).[3]
After 274 competitive games with Oviedo, the 33-year-old Rivas left the club in the 1999 Januarytransfer window, representingAlbacete Balompié over one and a halfSegunda División seasons. He closed out his career in theSegunda División B, after one year withBenidorm CF.
Rivas started coaching in2002–03, being one of four managers as Oviedo were relegated to the third division – eventually toTercera División due to irregularities.[4]Two years later, he led them to promotion to that level.[5]
In 2007, Rivas returned to his first professional team Atlético Madrid to take charge ofthe youth system.[6] After two years, he was appointed attheir reserves in division three, leading them to the seventh position inhis debut campaign.[7] He continued to work in lower-league and amateur football the following seasons, withCF Fuenlabrada[6] andAD Alcorcón B.[8]
Rivas rejoined Atlético's youths in 2017, winning the national championship of that category in his fourth season.[9] He was appointed again at the B team on 6 April 2021,[10] not being able toavoid relegation from the third tier.[11]
On 22 June 2021, Rivas was named academy director at Oviedo.[12]
Rivas is the father of thetwinsMario andÓscar, both footballers. The former is aforward and the latter is also a central defender.[13]
