Antonio Iriondo Ortega (born 3 November 1953) is a Spanish retiredfootballer who played as amidfielder and is a currentmanager. He has managed teams such asRayo Vallecano,CD San Fernando andRayo Majadahonda in Spain.
Born inMoscow to Spanish parents who, as children, had been sent to Russia in 1937 due to theSpanish Civil War, Iriondo returned to Spain in 1957 at the age of four.[1] He only played lower league football throughout his career, representingCDC Moscardó,CP Amorós,RCD Carabanchel,AD Alcorcón, Valdemoro CF, andTomelloso CF, retiring with the latter in 1982 at the age of 28.[2]
Iriondo started his managerial career atAD Villaviciosa de Odón in the regional leagues[3] and moved toCD Móstoles in 1991.[4] He subsequently managed lower league sides in theCommunity of Madrid, notablyCF Rayo Majadahonda for two different spells, where he achieved promotion toSegunda División B inhis third season.[2]
Iriondo subsequently managedCD Manchego before being appointedRayo Vallecano B manager in 2002. On 14 April 2003, he replaced the firedGustavo Benítez at the helm of themain squad inLa Liga.[5]
Iriondo remained in charge for nine matches,suffering relegation as dead last. After returning to the B-side in July 2003, he was namedUD San Sebastián de los Reyes manager the following February.[6]
Subsequently, Iriondo was appointed at the helm ofCD Toledo (two stints),[7][8]CD San Fernando,[9]San Fernando CD (two stints)[10][11] and Rayo Majadahonda.[12] With the latter he achieved promotion to the third division in2015, and took the clubs tothe play-offs for the first time in their history in2017.[13]
On 27 May 2018, Iriondo achieved promotion toSegunda División with theMajariegos, after beatingFC Cartagena inthe play-offs.[14] On 11 June of the following year, aftersuffering relegation, he resigned.[15]
On 26 July 2019, Iriondo was named manager of theIndian Super League sideJamshedpur FC.[16] After missing the playoffs in hisone year at theTata Steel-owned franchise, he returned to Majadahonda on a one-season deal with the option of a second.[17]
