Anton Gavel (born 24 October 1984) is a Slovak-German[1][2] professionalbasketball coach and former player. He is a 1.89-metre-tall (6 ft 2 in)combo guard who primarily played at theshooting guard position. He ishead coach forBrose Bamberg of theBasketball Bundesliga.
He is a four-timeSlovak Player of the Year (2005, 2010, 2011, 2012).
After playing with the youth clubs ofChemosvit, Gavel began his professional career in theGerman 2nd Division withKarlsuhe, during the 2001–02 season. He then moved to theGerman 1st Division clubGiessen 46ers in 2004. He was named theGerman League'sRookie of the Year in 2006.
After that, he joined theSpanish League clubMurcia in 2006.[3] He then joined theGreek League clubAris Thessaloniki for the 2008–09 season.[4] He then joined theSlovak League club Chemosvit for the start of the 2009–10 season, before signing with the German 1st Division clubBrose Baskets that same season.[5]
He was named theBBL Best Defensive Player in 2012.[6] In 2013, he won the award again, and was as well named theBBL Finals MVP, after he won his fourth straight German League title.
On 22 July 2014, Gavel signed a two-year contract with the German championBayern Munich.[7] On 8 July 2016, it was announced that he signed a two-year extension with the team.[8] Gavel announced his retirement on 28 August 2018.
Gavel played at the2005 World University Games. He was a member of the senior men'sSlovak national basketball team. Some of the tournaments that he played in with the Slovak senior men's national team included: theFIBA EuroBasket 2005 Division B, theFIBA EuroBasket 2007 Division B, theFIBA EuroBasket 2009 Division B, and theFIBA EuroBasket 2011 Division B. He also played at theFIBA EuroBasket 2013 qualification tournament.
In July 2015, two months beforeEuroBasket 2015, Gavel expressed his desire to represent the seniorGerman national team. On 13 August 2015,FIBA permitted him to switch to the German national team.[9] Gavel made his debut for Germany on 14 August 2015, againstCroatia.[10]
In the 2019–20 season, Gavel would be the head coach ofOrangeAcademy of the German third-tier leagueProB.[11]
On 25 June 2022, he has signed withratiopharm Ulm of theBasketball Bundesliga.[12]
On 27 March 2024, he signed a 3-year contract withBrose Bamberg of theBasketball Bundesliga (BBL).[13]
