Anthony Hawkins (30 September 1932 – 23 September 2013), was an English-born, Australian-based television actor. He was best known for his roles as Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Smith in thepolice proceduralSpecial Squad (1984) and Frank diAngelo onThe Saddle Club. He also had a recurring role inPrisoner as Bob Morris from 1980 to 1982.
He trained as an actor atGuildhall School of Music and Drama[1] following a brief stint working as a policeman in England.[2]
He was part of the cast in the first public performance ofKenneth G. Ross's important Australian playBreaker Morant, presented by theMelbourne Theatre Company at theAthenaeum Theatre, inMelbourne in 1978.
He also appeared in the playThe Happy Apple atSt Martins Theatre in Melbourne in 1971.[1] He toured theUnited States withAlfie, played inBirds on the Wing inMelbourne, andBandwagon inHobart.[1]
Early TV work was in the United Kingdom and included an appearance as apolice constable in the television seriesNo Hiding Place in 1959. He also acted in theScotland Yard film series of shorts.[1] His TV work in Australia includedRyan andPerryman on Parade, and frequent appearances on police dramas includingMatlock Police,Division 4,Homicide andCop Shop.[1] In 1978, he made his film debut in a minor role inBrian De Palma'sThe Fury. During the next two years, he starred in the television miniseriesAgainst the Wind andThe Last Outlaw and appeared in police seriesBluey (1976) before appearing in the soap operaPrisoner. Introduced asBob Morris, the father of inmateTracey Morris (Sue Devine), he eventually became a recurring character after the on-screen marriage of Bob Morris toMeg Jackson (Elspeth Ballantyne). He stayed with the series on an irregular basis until 1982, when he was written out entirely. That same year he made a cameo appearance with a number of his fellowPrisoner co-stars in the filmKitty and the Bagman.
He made a guest appearance inCarson's Law, and appeared in the filmsPhar Lap andStrikebound before joining the cast ofSpecial Squad as Greg Smith, a role he played from 1984 to 1985. Playing a supporting role asAllenby in the 1987 filmThe Lighthorsemen, during the late 1980s he also made appearances onThe Flying Doctors,Inside Running and the 1989 television movieDarlings of the Gods which featured cameo appearances of several other formerPrisoner co-stars.
During the early 1990s, he appeared onKelly,Bony andThe Damnation of Harvey McHugh as well as in police dramasJanus andMercury. His late career included recurring roles inOcean Girl,Tales of the South Seas and, on the popular Australian children's TV seriesThe Saddle Club.
