Anson Adams Mount IV (born February 25, 1973) is an American actor. He is known for his television roles as Cullen Bohannon in theAMCwestern drama seriesHell on Wheels, as Jim Steele on theNBC seriesConviction (2006), as theMarvel Comics superheroBlack Bolt in theMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise (appearing inInhumans andDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and as CaptainChristopher Pike in theStar Trek television seriesDiscovery,Short Treks (2019), andStrange New Worlds (2022–present).[1][2] He also starred oppositeBritney Spears in the coming-of-age filmCrossroads (2002). He is a member of the board of directors ofMETI International.[3]
Mount's father, Anson Adams Mount II, was one of the original contributing editors toPlayboy magazine.[4][5] His mother, Nancy Smith, is a former professional golfer.[6] From his father's first marriage, Mount has an older brother (Anson Adams Mount III) and two sisters.[7]
Mount attended Dickson County High School inDickson, Tennessee,Sewanee: The University of the South, andColumbia University.[4]
In 1998, Mount starred inTerrence McNally'sCorpus Christi, for which he was honored by the Drama League.[8]
In 2008, he was a finalist for the American Playwrights Conference at the O'Neill Center in 2008 for his full-length playAtomic City, and won the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Prize for his one-act playLove Liza?[9] In 2010 he appeared inAnton Chekhov'sThree Sisters atClassic Stage Company. In 2018 he appeared inRobert O'Hara'sMankind atPlaywrights Horizons.
Mount made his feature film debut in 2000 as Tully Coats in the independent filmTully.
In 2009, he produced and starred in the independent filmCook County, which earned awards at several major film festivals, including Hollywood, AFI Dallas, Nashville andSXSW.
In 2022, Mount portrayedBlack Bolt in theMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) filmDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, reprising his role from 2017'sInhumans.[10]
Mount is known for his role as Cullen Bohannon onAMC's seriesHell on Wheels, which he also produced from 2014 to 2016.[11]
In 2017, he starred asBlack Bolt in theMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)ABC television seriesInhumans.[1]
In 2018, he was cast as CaptainChristopher Pike of theStarshipEnterprise in theCBS seriesStar Trek: Discovery. His performance was well received,[12] and inspired a petition for a Pike spin-off series.[13] In 2019, he reprised his role as Pike in a fewStar Trek: Short Treks episodes. In May 2020, it was announced that, due in part to fans' requests,[14] he would return as Pike in the new seriesStar Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premiered on May 5, 2022.[15]
Mount is an adjunctassistant professor atColumbia University,[16] teaching audition technique for graduate actors.[17]
His non-fiction pieces have been published in the magazinesMosaic,[18]The Daily Beast[19] andCowboys & Indians,[20][21] and in theCalgary Herald newspaper.[22]
On July 8, 2017, Mount announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend,[23] photographer Darah Trang. They were married on February 20, 2018,[24] and have a daughter, who was born in December 2021.[25] He is anEpiscopalian.[26]
