Ansar ul-Islam was founded in 2004 byPir Saif-ur Rehman, an AfghanSufi preacher, influenced by theBarelvi movement ofSunni Islam.[1] They are a militantIslamist group in North-westPakistan and are rivals ofLashkar-e-Islam.[2][3]

The group was being led by Qazi Mehboob-ul-Haq in 2013[update].[1]

The group was banned by the Pakistani government in June 2008,[4] and the ban was renewed in Pakistan's 2014 National Internal Security Policy.[5]
