Annette Schmiedchen is a German author, scholar ofSanskrit epigraphy,indologist, a researcher at theHumboldt University of Berlin and a member of faculty ofIndology atMartin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg.[1][2] She is the author of several articles onIndian heritage and Culture[1] and the book,Herrschergenealogie und Religioses Patronat: Die Inschriftenkultur derRastrakutas,Silaharas undYadavas, the 17th book released under the series, Gonda Indological Studies byBrill Publishers.[3] TheGovernment of India honoured her in 2015 with the award ofPadma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.[4]

Biography

Annette Schmiedchen, born in Germany in 1966,[2] did her studies on Indian History and Indology at theHumboldt University of Berlin and later at theMartin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg.[1] She obtained her doctoral degree fromHumboldt University of Berlin in 1994[5] on the thesis,Grants of Villages, Land, and Money in Favour of Buddhist Monasteries in Northern India from the 5th to the 8th Centuries after which she submitted aHabilitation thesis onEpigraphical Culture and Regional Tradition in Early Medieval Maharashtra: Legitimizing Political Power and Official Religious Patronage under the Royal Dynasties of theRastrakutas,Silaharas, andYadavas from the 8th to the 13th Centuries toMartin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg in 2008 to secure aHabilitation degree a year later.[1][2] She works as a member of faculty of the Martin Luther University[5] and pursues research on aEuropean Research Council funded project onMedieval Foundations and Endowments at Humboldt University.[1][2]

Schmiedchen is a regular visiter to India since 1992 for her researches[2] and has written several articles, in German and English,[6][7][8][9][10] on Indian culture and Sanskrit epigraphy. Her maiden book,Herrschergenealogie und religiöses Patronat. Die Inschriftenkultur derRastrakutas,Silaharas undYadavas, was released in 2014.[3] She is an honorary Research Fellow of theInternational Association of Sanskrit Studies[11] and is associated withJawaharlal Nehru University and theIndian Council for Cultural Relations who funded her first project in India.[2] She is married to Rainer Schmiedchen[2] who is the Consul General of Germany in Kolkata.[12] TheGovernment of India included her in the 66thRepublic Day honours list, in 2015, for the civilian award ofPadma Shri for her contributions toSanskrit language andIndology.[2][4][5]
