Anna Leonidovna Khachiyan (Russian:Анна Леонидовна Хачиян ; born August 23, 1985)[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] is an Americancultural critic ,[ 4] [ 5] writer,[ 6] and co-host of theRed Scare podcast withDasha Nekrasova , based out ofNew York City .[ 7] [ 8] She is the daughter of Soviet-American mathematicianLeonid Khachiyan .[ 9]
Khachiyan was born inMoscow , Soviet Union, on August 23, 1985.[ 2] [ 3] In 1990, sheimmigrated to the United States with her parents and was raised inNew Jersey .[ 10] Her father is the Soviet mathematician andRutgers University professorLeonid Khachiyan and her mother is Olga Pischikova Reynberg.[ 9] She is ofArmenian ,Russian andAshkenazi Jewish descent.[ 11] [ 12]
Khachiyan graduated fromSouth Brunswick High School in 2003.[ 13] She received the Patrick J. Quigley memorial scholarship fromRutgers University in 2006, studying economics andart history and graduating with honors.[ 14] She went on to pursue a master's degree in art history atNew York University ,[ 15] as well as a PhD in Soviet architecture, completing the former and dropping out of the latter.[ 7] [ 10]
BeforeRed Scare , Khachiyan worked odd jobs as a restaurant hostess,[ 16] illustrator[ 17] and actress.[ 18]
On March 29, 2018, Khachiyan started the cultural commentary podcastRed Scare , with co-host and actressDasha Nekrasova . Khachiyan suffers fromadult-onset Still's disease , which she was diagnosed with after contractingCOVID-19 in 2021.[ 38] She had previously questioned the efficacy of vaccines in the efforts to curb COVID-19, describing herself as becoming "an even more conservative Covid truther".[ 39]
