Anna Kathryn Gunn[1] (born August 11, 1968)[2] is an American actress. She is known for portrayingSkyler White on theAMC crime drama seriesBreaking Bad (2008–2013), for which she won twoPrimetime Emmy Awards and aScreen Actors Guild Award.

Gunn has starred in the legal drama seriesThe Practice (1997–2002), theWestern seriesDeadwood (2004–2006) asMartha Bullock, and the crime drama seriesGracepoint (2014). Her film roles include the action thrillerEnemy of the State (1998), theindependent thrillerRed State (2011), thedocudramaLittle Red Wagon (2012), the financial thrillerEquity (2016), the biographical dramaSully (2016), the comedy dramaBeing Frank (2018), and theDeadwoodsequel filmDeadwood: The Movie (2019). She also voiced Ariel in theLegacy of Kain video game series (1996–2003).

Early life and education

Anna Kathryn Gunn was born on August 11, 1968,[2] inCleveland, Ohio, and grew up inSanta Fe, New Mexico,[3] the daughter of Shana (née Peters; 1942–2022) and Clemens "Clem" Earl Gunn Jr. (1939–2024).[4][5] She has one brother named Matthew.[6] She is the great-great granddaughter ofWilliam Rufus Day (through his son Luther) who was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.[7]

Gunn graduated fromSanta Fe Preparatory School in 1986,[8] then attendedNorthwestern University inEvanston, Illinois, where she majored in theater[3] and graduated in 1990.[9][10] In the fall of 1988, she spent a semester abroad to study at theBritish American Drama Academy.[citation needed] She moved toLaurel Canyon inLos Angeles, California, where she shared a house withPamela Adlon.[11]

Career

Gunn's first screen credit was theQuantum Leap episode "The Play's the Thing". She had a recurring role as Assistant District Attorney Jean Ward on theABC seriesThe Practice from 1997 to 2002, and was series regular asMartha Bullock onHBO'sDeadwood from 2005 to 2006. She appeared onSeinfeld in the episode "The Glasses", in theSix Feet Under episode "Parallel Play", and on the first season ofMurder One. She also provided the voice ofAriel in theLegacy of Kain series of video games.[12][13][14][15][16]

Gunn starred asSkyler White in theAMC drama seriesBreaking Bad, for which she was nominated for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2012, 2013 and 2014, winning in 2013 and 2014.[17] In August 2013, she wrote an op-ed piece forThe New York Times examining thepublic dislike directed toward her character.[18]

In 2011, Gunn had a lead role in theLifetime filmSecrets of Eden, oppositeJohn Stamos.[19] Her other film credits includeWithout Evidence,Enemy of the State,Treading Water, andRed State.

In February 2013, cable networkBravo announced that Gunn would star in apilot for a one-hour TV drama,Rita, based on aDanish TV series about a private-school teacher and mother. TheFox TV Studios pilot was to be written byKrista Vernoff and directed byMiguel Arteta.[20]

In 2014, Gunn starredOff-Broadway withBilly Magnussen inSex with Strangers, directed byDavid Schwimmer atSecond Stage Theater.[21]

Gunn starred in the 2016 filmEquity. Billed as the first female-drivenWall Street film, it premiered at the2016 Sundance Film Festival.[22][23] That same year, she starred inClint Eastwood's biographical drama filmSully.[24]

In 2019, Gunn starred as Maxine Faulk in theNoël Coward Theater limited-time production ofTennessee Williams'The Night of the Iguana.[25][26]

Personal life

Gunn married Scottish actor and real estate brokerAlastair Duncan in 1990. They divorced in 2009.[3] They have two daughters.[27]
