Ann McKechin (born 22 April 1961)[1] is a formerBritish Labour Party politician and wasMember of Parliament (MP) forGlasgow Maryhill from2001 until2005 andGlasgow North from 2005 to2015. She was a junior minister underGordon Brown before becoming a member ofShadow Cabinet of Ed Miliband. She lost her seat to theScottish National Party in thelandslide at the2015 general election.

Early life

Born inPaisley to Anne (née Coyle) and William Joseph McKechin, she was educated atPaisley Grammar School[2][3] and Sacred Heart High School, before studyingScots law at theUniversity of Strathclyde. She joined theGlasgow-based Pacitti Jones solicitors in 1983 as a solicitor, becoming a partner in 1990, she left the practice in 2000.[4]

McKechin held several posts within theGlasgow Kelvin Labour Party from 1995, then the constituency ofGeorge Galloway, then aLabour MP. She was selected as a candidate for the1999 European election, but failed to be elected.

Political career

She was elected to theHouse of Commons at the2001 general election for theGlasgow Maryhill constituency, following the retirement of the previous Labour MP,Maria Fyfe. She retained the Maryhill seat with a majority of nearly 10,000 votes. In the boundary changes which came into force for the2005 election, the Maryhill constituency was abolished, and McKechin was elected for the newly drawn Glasgow North constituency, but with a much-reduced majority of 3,338 over theScottish Liberal Democrats.

In the House of Commons, McKechin served briefly as theParliamentary Private Secretary toJacqui Smith in 2005 in her capacity asMinister of State at both theDepartment of Trade and Industry and at theDepartment for Education and Skills. She also served on a number of select committees including;Scottish Affairs (2001–05) andInternational Development (since 2005). She replacedDavid Cairns asParliamentary Under-Secretary of State at theScotland Office on 16 September 2008.

In October 2010, McKechin was elected to theShadow Cabinet and appointed as ShadowSecretary of State for Scotland, but was replaced byMargaret Curran in shadow cabinet reshuffle on 7 October 2011.[5]

Shelost her seat toPatrick Grady of theScottish National Party at the2015 general election.
