Anglo-Israelis, also referred to asAnglo-Saksim (Hebrew: אנגלו-סקסונים) orEnglish-speaking Israelis, areAnglophoneJewisholim and their descendants in theState of Israel. An integral part ofIsraeli Jewish society, they have imported into Israel the customs of their countries of origin.[1][2][3]

Anglo-Israelis can generally be defined as coming from theUnited States,Canada, theUnited Kingdom,Australia,New Zealand, andSouth Africa.[4][5][6][7]

Name origin

The term "Anglo-Saksim" is not anethnic term in Israel, but rather acultural andlinguistic term fordiaspora Jews whose first language isEnglish and who grew up in a country within theAnglosphere.[8][9][10]

The name derives from theAnglo-Saxons who were the precursor population to the modernEnglish people.[11]

Jews have existed in theEnglish-speaking world since theMiddle Ages when Jewish merchants fromNormandy arrived inEngland in 1070.[12]

During the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, the7th Armored Brigade became known as the "Anglo-Saxon Brigade", due to its heavy amount of Anglo-Israeli soldiers.[13]
