Angela Kang (born March 23, 1976) is an American television writer known for serving as showrunner on theAMC horror drama seriesThe Walking Dead for the final three seasons.
Kang was born and raised inIrvine, California, the daughter of working-classKorean immigrants.[1][2] She received aBachelor of Arts in English and Theater fromOccidental College inLos Angeles,California in 1998, after which she had several short stories and poems published, and also wrote a number of plays. She eventually returned to school where she received aMaster of Fine Arts degree inscreenwriting from theUniversity of Southern California where she was the recipient of the Annenberg Graduation Fellowship.[3][4]
Her first job in the television industry came when she worked as anintern for theABC medical drama seriesGrey's Anatomy andPrivate Practice.[3] Her first job as astaff writer was for the unairedNBCpost-apocalyptic seriesDay One, which she got coming out ofgraduate school.[3] Shortly thereafter, she was hired as a staff writer on the short-livedFX seriesTerriers, of which she wrote two episodes. She also wrote the short filmsSlow Pitch in Relief (2009) andHarlequin (2004).[5]
In 2011, she joined the writing staff of the acclaimedAMC horror drama seriesThe Walking Dead as astory editor forseason two. She was promoted toproducer forseason three (2012–2013), co-executive producer forseason five (2014–2015), andshowrunner for seasonsnine througheleven (2018–2022). Kang also starred on theTalking Dead, a talk show talking aboutThe Walking Dead andFear the Walking Dead. Following the conclusion of the11th and final season ofThe Walking Dead, Kang was announced to serve as showrunner of the spin-off seriesThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, originally set to focus on the characters ofDaryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) as well asCarol Peletier (Melissa McBride).[6] In April 2022, she exited the project as showrunner, but remained as anexecutive producer.[7] In 2022, she signed an overall deal with Amazon and joined theSSU seriesSilk: Spider-Society[broken anchor] as showrunner.[8] In 2024, Amazon chose to no longer move forward with the series after they requested it to focus less heavily on Silk, and returned the rights to Sony so the studio could shop the series to other networks.[9]
