Andrzej Pisera is a Polishpaleoecologist and researcher of fossil and modernred algae,echinoderms, andsponges.

Biography

[edit]

Pisera studied at theFaculty of Geology, University of Warsaw, where he received his master’s degree in 1974. Since 1981, his career has been associated with theInstitute of Paleobiology, Polish Academy of Sciences, where he earned his PhD in 1986 and habilitation in 1998.[1] In 1993–1994, he was aFulbright Foundation scholar.[2] In 2015, he was awarded the title of professor of Earth Sciences.[1][3] He is one of the editors of theWorld Porifera Database, a subproject of theWorld Register of Marine Species.[4]

Significance in the history of science

[edit]

Pisera is co-author ofSystema Porifera, an authoritative[5] taxonomic revision of all (approx. 680) genera of modern sponges,[6] as well as author of a revision of Upper Jurassic sponges from theSwabian Jura (124 species). Pisera and co-authors also proposed a new model for the formation of the giant spicule (up to 3 m long) in the glass spongeMonorhaphis chuni.[7]

He described numerous newtaxa:

  • genera of Devonian sponges, includingJazwicella Rigby & Pisera, 2001,Polonospongia Rigby & Pisera, 2001,Astyloscyphia Rigby & Pisera, 2001;
  • genera of modern sponges, includingNeoschrammeniella Pisera & Lévi, 2002,[6]Isabella Schlacher-Hoenlinger, Pisera & Hooper, 2005,[8] andLevispongia Schuster, Pisera, Ekins & Debitus, 2021;[9]
  • numerousspecies.

Recognition

[edit]

Three animal species were named in his honor: a fossil (Jurassic) gastropodBuvignieria piserai Kaim, 2004,[10] a fossil (Cretaceous) spongeLaocetis piserai Vodrážka & Crame, 2011,[11] and a modern spongeNeoschrammeniella piserai Carvalho, Cárdenas, Ríos, Cristobo, Rapp & Xavier, 2020.[12]
