Andrew William Sanchez (born April 8, 1988)[2] is an American professionalmixed martial artist who competes in theLight heavyweight division. A professional competitor since 2012, he has formerly competed for theUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC),Professional Fighters League (PFL), andResurrection Fighting Alliance.[1]

Background

Sanchez started training in various forms of martial arts as a teenager. He was a two-time national championship wrestler atMcKendree University and was named the 2011 NAIA Wrestler of the Year. He graduated in 2011 with a degree in sociology.[1]

Mixed martial arts career

Sanchez began fighting professionally in 2012 where he compiled a record of 7–2 on the regional circuit.

The Ultimate Fighter

He was added as one of the 16 Light Heavyweight fighters invited to the castThe Ultimate Fighter 23.[3]

He won his entry fight againstPhil Hawes via unanimous decision.[4] Next up, he defeated Myron Dennis via unanimous decision.[5]

In the semifinals, he defeatedEric Spicely by knockout in the first round.[6]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Sanchez made his promotional debut on July 8, 2016, at UFCThe Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale in the Light Heavyweight finals againstKhalil Rountree.[7] He won the one-sided fight via unanimous decision with the score card of (30-25, 30–25, 30–26).[8][9]

Sanchez next facedTrevor Smith in a middleweight bout on December 9, 2016, atUFC Fight Night 102.[10] He won the fight by unanimous decision.[11]

Sanchez facedAnthony Smith on April 15, 2017, atUFC on Fox 24.[12] He lost the fight via knockout due to a combination of knee and punches in the third round.[13]

Sanchez facedRyan Janes on December 1, 2017, atThe Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale.[14] He lost the fight via TKO in the third round.[15]

Sanchez was expected to faceAntonio Braga Neto on August 25, 2018, atUFC Fight Night 135.[16] However, Neto was removed from the bout on August 2 for undisclosed personal issues and replaced byMarkus Perez.[17] Sanchez won the fight via unanimous decision.[18]

Sanchez faced promotional newcomerMarc-André Barriault on May 4, 2019, atUFC Fight Night 151.[19] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[20]

Sanchez was scheduled to faceDavid Branch on September 14, 2019, atUFC on ESPN+ 16.[21] However, it was reported that Branch was forced to pull from the event due to injury and he was replaced byMarvin Vettori.[22] However, it was reported that Sanchez was forced to pull from the event due to an eye infection, resulting in the cancellation of the bout.[23] In turn, the pairing was left intact and eventually took place a month later atUFC on ESPN+ 19.[24] Sanchez lost the fight via unanimous decision.[25]

Sanchez was scheduled to faceZak Cummings onApril 25, 2020.[26] Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, UFC presidentDana White announced on April 9 that the event was indefinitely postponed.[27]

Sanchez facedWellington Turman on August 8, 2020, atUFC Fight Night 174.[28] He won the fight via knockout in the first round.[29] This win earned him thePerformance of the Night award.[30]

Sanchez was scheduled to faceAndré Muniz on January 24, 2021 atUFC 257.[31] In late December, Muniz withdrew due to an injury and he was replaced byMakhmud Muradov.[32] Sanchez lost the fight via technical knockout in round three.[33]

Sanchez facedBruno Silva on October 16, 2021, atUFC Fight Night 195.[34] Sanchez lost the fight via technical knockout in round three.[35]

On October 28, 2021, it was announced that Sanchez was no longer on the UFC roster.[36]

Post UFC

Sanchez faced Gabriel Checco on May 20, 2022, atEagle FC 47.[37] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[38]

Professional Fighters League

Stepping in for a suspended fighter, Sanchez entered the 2023 season against Taylor Johnson on June 8, 2023 atPFL 4.[39] He won the fight via split decision.[40]

Sanchez was scheduled to faceKarl Albrektsson, replacing Ibragim Chuzhigaev on June 21, 2024, atPFL 5.[41] Subsequently, Sanchez stepped in to face2022 PFL welterweight winnerSadibou Sy afterTom Breese withdrew at the last minute and the bout against Albrektsson was cancelled.[42] He lost the fight via TKO in the third round.[43]
