Sir Andrew Jeremy Coulter EdisPC (born 9 June 1957), styledThe Rt Hon. Lord Justice Edis,[1] is aLord Justice of Appeal, who served as theSenior Presiding Judge having previously served as aHigh Court Judge.
Edis studied atLiverpool College andUniversity College, Oxford.[2]
He wascalled to the Bar in 1980. He became an AssistantRecorder in 1994, a DeputyHigh Court Judge in 2001,Bencher ofMiddle Temple in 2004 and Senior TreasuryCounsel in 2008.
Edis has been ranked byChambers and Partners[3] andThe Legal 500[4] as a top advocate in crime.
His work has included high-profile cases that have been featured in national newspapers such asThe Independent[5] and by theBBC.[6][7] For example, he defended in the 2005Lady in the Lake trial.[4][7] He has also undertaken book reviewing for theTimes Higher Education Supplement.[8]
Edis was counsel for the ultimately successful prosecution inR v Huhne, the trial of former BritishSecretary of State for Energy and Climate ChangeChris HuhneMP and his former wife,Vicky Pryce forperverting the course of justice in relation to a 2003 speeding case. In May 2013, Edis was lead prosecutor in the trial of Jiervon Bartlett and Nayed Hoque, who were accused of the murder of Paula Castle after allegedly mugging her inGreenford; they later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.[9] In late 2013, Edis was the lead prosecutor in theNews of the World newspaper phone-hacking scandal trial,R v Brooks, Coulson and six others.[10]
Edis was appointed aJustice of the High Court[11] on 1 October 2014 andknighted.[12] He became a Lord Justice of Appeal on 27 January 2021.[13]
In his spare time, Edis is an enthusiastic cricketer and was one of the founding members of the Liverpool Bar Cricket Club, once taking career best figures of 7–12 in their annual fixture against the Inn[clarification needed] atWhitewell.[14]
