Andavadoaka is a smallfishing village located on the southwest coast ofMadagascar. It is located in theMorombe (district), 45 km south of the town ofMorombe in the region ofAtsimo-Andrefana. It belongs to the rural municipality ofBefandefa.
Thevillage lies on the edge of a shallowlagoon protected from the openocean by a series of fringing and submerged barrierreefs that support substantialcoral growth, providing a vital resource base for a localartisanalfishery. Owing to the remoteness and isolation, thesecoral reefs are thought to possess a significantly higher abundance and diversity ofspecies than otherreefs in southwestMadagascar.
Andavadoaka is one of the founding villages of a locally managed marine area. Thevillage won theEquator Prize,[1] awarded by theUnited Nations Development Program (UNDP), in 2007.
Near Andavodoaka,Biodiversity studies have identified many hundreds ofmarine species in the waters in the area. Thereefs around Andavadoaka represent some of the most well-developedcoral reef systems in theIndian Ocean.
Andavadoaka is one of the few small villages in the South-West of Madagascar with general access to electricity. It is fed by about 65 kWp of solar panels and backed by a battery bank.
