It was shot at theTempelhof Studios inBerlin andon location aroundLüdenscheid and atAltena Castle. The film's sets were designed by theart director Gerhard Ladner.
In the final days of theSecond World War, five boys evacuated toWestphalia want to travel toBerlin to defend the capital fromAllied forces. Gradually they become more disillusioned by the war and their faith in theNazi regime is broken. Gehlhorn, an older soldier, becomes an effective father figure to them and helps them survive the fighting.
